ICON: Visions of Eternity

Come immerse yourself in visions of eternity at ICON, a weekend of spiritual art, music, poetry and meditation in the resonant space of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle.

Stunning icons by Serbian-Australian icon painter Michael Galovic will rim the sanctuary in divine gold, inviting us to go deeply into themes of holiness and transformation via a Christian artistic tradition stretching back 15 centuries. FREE

Deep looping double bass by Rosemary Ponnekanti will echo the icons’ mystical beauty in music and inviting meditation. $15/$10  BUY TICKETS

• 4pm Guided Meditation

Join meditation leader Emma Harris to sink deeply into the icons' presence. FREE

• 7pm: Visions of Eternity Choral Concert

Soaring harmonies from the Cathedral Choir under David Banney with David Drury, organ. Timeless classics include Allegri 'Miserere', Handel 'Hallelujah Chorus', Bach, Howells, Fauré and more. $25/$15  BUY TICKETS

Meet icon painter Michael Galovic over drinks and nibbles, and join in a Q&A about on icons and religious art, with launch of his new book ‘Sailing Back to Byzantium’. Books and icons available for purchase. FREE

• 3pm: Poetry open-mic

See the icons during the weekend, then return for this open-mic of ekphrastic poetry inspired by spiritual art. Sign-ups at the door. FREE

• 6pm: Choral Evensong

More glorious icon-inspired music and prayer with the Cathedral Choir and organ. FREE

Michael Galovic is an Australian icon artist whose works have been commissioned and exhibited worldwide. Born in the former Yugoslavia, he trained at the Belgrade Academy of Arts, learning to paint icons under the expertise of his step-father. Now based in the Central Coast, Michael's work can be found in churches, universities, museums and private collections around Australia and in the Vatican.

Michael has been featured in numerous publications, and has just released his latest book "Sailing Back to Byzantium."
